Subash has made it - today he works as a hotel manager at the Hotel RIVA in Constance on Lake Constance
The most important thing was perseverance
As part of my tourism studies, I started learning German. But soon I loved the German language more than my studies. I looked for German-speaking teachers and practiced the language in dealing with German tourists. With a very good B1 exam, I came to Bavaria in 2016 to complete an apprenticeship as a hotel manager. I was very frustrated right away - I couldn't do anything right. I was then also certified as having "too slow comprehension". We Nepalese act much too slowly for Germany and I was very happy to have Ruth by my side. She reacted quickly and negotiated with the hotel managers. She always encouraged me not to give up. It's not enough to speak good German, but you have to react quickly and correctly, otherwise the German is gone. Germans have no time and no patience. You always have to be prepared, because no one waits until you are ready.
At the start of the training, I first noticed how many educational gaps we have. We did and talked about so many things that we Nepalese have no idea about. Ruth answered all my questions. At first, I didn't know at all what I needed it for. But in Germany you have to be informed about everything, read a lot, have an opinion and act accordingly. Germany is a very free country with many opportunities, but you have to be able to recognize and use them, you have to know what you want and work for it. I often reached my limits.
Mastering the language is a basic requirement for life here, but there are so many other things that you have to learn and do at the same time. The Nepalese, who is Dal Bhaat by hand, suddenly sits in the restaurant with a knife and fork and is supposed to be engaged in conversation. I had to read specialist books and work with these specialist texts, alone. It took almost a year before I could actually understand other people, because I didn't know the cultural context. Ruth showed me step by step the way to cope with the situations. It has always intervened when necessary. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to do it. Germany is completely different and highly complicated.
In the meantime, I have worked in various hotels and I get along reasonably well. But even after eight years, it is still challenging to live and get along here. Let us accompany and help you on the way - so that you reach your destination safely.
